Sensata Technologies (known as Sensata) has suffered a ransomware attack last weekend that encrypted parts of the company network and disrupted operations.

In an 8-K filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Sensata says that the attack occurred on Sunday, April 6, and involved data theft, too.

“The incident has temporarily impacted Sensata’s operations, including shipping, receiving, manufacturing production, and various other support functions,” reads the notification.

Sensata Technologies is an industrial technology company that develops, manufactures, and sells a wide range of sensors and sensor-rich solutions, as well as electrical protection components and systems.

The company’s products are for automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications. In 2023, Sensata reported an annual revenue of  $4 billion.

Sensata says that it has taken immediate action to speed up the restoration process for crucial functions impacted by the cyberattack. However, the company cannot provide a timeline for the completion of this effort.

A preliminary investigation with assistance from external cybersecurity experts confirmed that the hackers have exfiltrated data from the company network.

Data theft is a common tactic used by ransomware actors to extort victims, increase pressure to pay a ransom, and create legal and regulatory complexities.

Currently, Sensata is still determining what files were stolen in the attack and will notify impacted individuals and regulatory authorities as needed, based on the results of its investigation.

The company does not expect any material impact on its financial results for the running quarter ending this year on June 30.

However, Sensata admits this could change when the full scope and impact of the security incident are fully appreciated.

At the time of writing, no ransomware group has claimed the attack against Sensata.
